FINISHING BY YOUR PAINTING CONTRACTOR:
- The fabricator will spray prime the panels (they still need to be scuffed) making them fully ready for painting, assuming no need to retrim sizes. If you trim them, the raw edges must be primed.
- The -priming seals in the tannins of cedar and is a must.
PAINTING RECOMMENDATIONS
EXTERIOR SHUTTERS CONSTRUCTED OF DURABLE, DECAY-RESISTANT WESTERN RED CEDAR
Cedar shutters are naturally decay resistant. If left unpainted they will silver and last for many years. If a shutter is to be painted it is important that certain steps be followed to ensure that the shutter is protected from moisture and a quality finish is obtained.
Painting with an air sprayer is recommended for the best possible finish. Two thin applications are better than one thick coat that pools in the corners.
1. PAINT SELECTION
- A quality oil-based primer formulated for Western Red Cedar is required to assure proper adhesion to the surface as well as block any Tannin bleed that might occur.
- Premium oil-based paints generally provides a smoother finish than latex paints. Higher quality latex paints, however, may have a longer lifespan.
2. SHUTTER PREPARATION
- Lightly sand the shutter using 150 grit sandpaper, removing any sharp edges or loose fibers.
- Caulk and seal all joints and end-grain to prevent liquid penetration.
- Clean off any dust by blowing the shutter with dry compressed air or a good dusting with a clean tack cloth.
3. PRIMING THE SHUTTER
- Recommend Sherwin Williams 101 as an excellent primer and will assure proper adhesion to the surface as well as block any Tannin bleed that might occur.
- It is very important that all six sides of the shutter are primed equally.
- Allow the primer to dry as per manufacturer instructions and resand the shutter with 150-180 grit sandpaper until the primer coat is smooth to the touch.
- Apply a second coat of primer on all six sides of the shutter and resand the shutter with 150-180 grit sandpaper until the second primer coat is smooth to the touch. No bare wood should be visible. Spot prime as needed.
4. FINISH COAT IMPORTANT: Primer must be completely dry and cured before final finishing.
- Recommend Sherwin Williams Super Paint, a latex finish coat is an excellent paint and may last as long as 20 years. They will spray any top grade national paint brand and color.
- Clean off any dust by blowing the shutter with dry compressed air or a good dusting with a clean tack cloth.
- It is very important that all six sides of the shutter are finished equally.
- Multiple finish coats may be required to ensure uniform coverage and color. After each coat is dry, lightly sand the shutter with a 150-180 grit sandpaper until smooth to the touch.
- Thin coats are better than thick heavy coats.
- Clean off any dust by blowing the shutter with dry compressed air or a good dusting with a clean tack cloth.
- Apply final finish coat on all six sides of the shutter.
- Allow finished shutters to dry and cure fully prior to installation.
Following these steps and recommendations, along with timely paint repair and maintenance, will ensure that your cedar shutters last a lifetime.
We have learned that the worse enemies of long last shutters are poor quality panels (ours are the best!, mounting tight to house, and lawn sprinkler systems.
Our experience is that "house painters" simply do not like to paint shutters!
Keep them happy. At least order your shutters pre-primed, but the investment in quality painting is worth ever penny and everything considered is a small price..
Screw Hole Plugs
- Unfinished panels arrive with the screw cap plugs not installed. That is done so that if any width trimming is required the operator will know that a screw is buried 1" +/- in the wood. This is a press fit and no glue is required.
- The screw plugs should be installed in the screw holes once the width is resolved and before painting.
Installation By Others
- You should find a reliable contractor or handyman who is so insured, to include using extension ladders.
- All wood exterior shutters should be mounted to the house with at least a 3/8" or 1/2" spacer between the back of the panels and the house siding to allow for adequate ventilation. Thicker spacers, such as 3/4", might allow small birds to nest behind the panels.
- It is recommended that the panels be attached with rust proof "deck screws" sunk flush to the wood, not counter sunk deep. Extra paint can be dabbed on them.
Crating and FOB Shipping
- Almost all shipments are made by freight truck. They are crated for protection.
- FOB Shipping Charges: There is FREE SHIPPING to 48 US states for any size order of normal sized panels with standard delivery.
- Unusual delivery requirements should be identified before hand. Long driveways and steep inclines aren't compatiblity with a pallet load of heavy shutters.
- Basically, the delivery is to your driveway/curb. Any special delivery or handling charges are NOT included. Think ahead!
A time to address special requirements is when the trucking company calls to arrange the delivery.
