Painting Exterior Shutters

Painting Exterior Red Cedar Shutters

The Wood Works, Inc Painting

We will custom spray paint with the client's paint, three coats per side.

  • Panels will be ordered pre-primed @ $50/pair with oil base to seal in tannins
  • We spray 3 coats of paint in addition to the factory primer. We recommend a first, additional primer coat of an oil-based primer tinted as close to the final color as possible. The oil penetrates into the wood better and so offers better protection. It can be applied in a much finer mist thereby reaching between and around louvers and into seams, joints and corners.
  • The top two coats should be a premium-grade exterior latex paint. A topcoat of exterior latex will not chalk or fade like oil. We recommend satin or semi-gloss.
  • Paint required from the client is 1 quart per 18 sq. ft for the oil primer. Also 1 gallon per 36 sq. ft PLUS 1 qt setup of the latex. Extra paint will be returned to the client.
  • We recommend Benjamin Moore "Fresh Start" Penetrating Alkyd Primer (tinted) and Impervex Latex High Gloss Metal & Wood Enamel. Both available at Gragg's Paint at 6745 W 119th, 913-338-3346.

Client DIY/House Painter Painting

The panels can be ordered with exterior oil pre-primed $50/pair. The panels may then be painted with water-based latex exterior grade paint. While the paint can be brushed, it is recommended that the paint be sprayed. Most house painters will spray them with their airless spray systems for latex.

Screw Hole Plugs

The panels arrive with the screw cap plugs not installed. That is done so that if any width trimming is required the operator will know that a screw is buried in the wood.

  • The screw plugs should be installed in the screw holes once the width is resolved and before painting.
  • Any wood glue is adequate since the paint will also hold them.

Installation

  • All wood exterior shutters should be mounted to the house with at least a ½" spacer between the back of the panels and the house siding to allow for adequate ventilation.
  • It is recommended that the panels be attached with rust proof "deck screws" sunk flush to the wood. The extra paint can be dabbed on them.
  • We do not install exterior shutters. Most any handyman service will perform this task for you.
  • We can recommend such services with no guarantee on our part.
