What is the Process?
The Background:
As custom woodworkers since 1979, we have performed cabinet making to match existing, kitchen refacing with door or drawer replacement, plantation shutters, and furniture repair and restoration, all with our top quality finishing.
We have regularly surveyed the wide selection of suppliers for Kitchen Refacing. Kitchen refacing basically consisted of 1)replacing doors and drawers with painted doors and then painting over the existing cabinets, or 2) replacing doors and drawers with low quality and poorly finished stained doors and then covering over the existing cabinets with thin ¼" plywood. If you were lucky the process included real wood veneer made for the purpose. Matching moldings were hard to find. Finally, pulling together all of the various parts from different sources and getting them finished to match was a major challenge.
We have performed kitchen refacing services for many years. We have used only top quality doors, drawer fronts, and specially made matching real wood veneers with matching moldings, all from different sources. We performed all of the finishing work ourselves to get top quality.
The primary constraint for a good and cost effective result has been to find that one crucial supplier who could provide all of the needed components of top quality wood and workmanship in all the parts needed to include doors, drawer fronts, special veneer, trim moldings, and accessories all pre-finished to a comfortable range of standard colors. We have found the crucial source! In fact, we have found two!
The total result and price savings to you are significant. What makes it even better for both of us is that they also offer a variety of door styles in several price ranges in the various woods and stain colors desired today.
We believe this has opened up a whole new service that goes beyond kitchen refacing or kitchen re-veneering. We call the new service Kitchen Rehabilitation.
The Estimate and Pricing Stages:
The basic estimate for your kitchen rehabilitation project can be easily created after determining what your kitchen will require. We need to have a basic list, by size, of all doors, drawers, false fronts and ends of cabinets that show. Also any needed moldings and accessories.
It is then possible to determine the price implications of moving from one wood to another and from one door style to another, all of which impact your final cost. You can review these choices based on your wants and desires and make decisions based on your home improvement budget.
Our role, as woodworking experts, is to guide you through the needed decisions based on your kitchen. We will insure that only top quality and proper sizing requirements are met. It is your decision where you decide within the ranges.
We do not come to your home until you are ready to proceed, at which time we will confirm all aspects with any minor final pricing adjustments that might be required. We will not pressure you into making a decision. We are here for you when you need us.
The Sequence:
Home work: Some basic home work on your part is required. We need to know what you have to start. Home work: Some basic home work on your part is required. We need to know what you have to start.
You should take photographs of each wall of your kitchen and any special aspects that we need to be aware of. These photos also document your "before" status. If you only want to bring photos without measurements we will guestimate the sizes involved.
Take a yard stick and measure the width and height to the nearest full inch of each door, drawer, and end of cabinet that shows. It is suggested that you start with the wall cabinets on the left end of your kitchen and move clockwise around the room, and then continue with the lower base cabinets. Dont worry, because we will measure accurately later.

We ask that you empty the counter tops of their contents. We need all drawers emptied so we can work with them. You need to remove from the cabinets any items that might be breakable or have food stuffs in open containers such as cereal boxes. This is a good time for you to thoroughly wipe down the insides of the cabinets and to replace shelf paper. You can also work on the cabinet interiors during the evenings while we are performing your other work.
On the 1st day we remove the existing doors, drawers, and trim, then prepare the cabinets and install the new veneer. We start to hang the new doors when we can.
On the 2nd day we will remount the drawers and complete the door hanging. We start the trim fitting and installation when we can.
Based on the size of your kitchen this process may stretch into the 3rd day.
You can use the kitchen and appliances each morning and evening.
Other Topics:
Our general approach will require no replacement of flooring or counter tops or reworking of wall paint or paper because we will insure that all prior edges are at least covered.
We can modify existing cabinets for new appliances or other reasons.
We can add additional cabinets made to match your existing cabinets, if you have additional wall space and need extra storage.
We offer a whole series of custom fittings for the interior of your cabinets. They can be fitted at this time, but if base cabinets are involved they should best be done when counters are being replaced.
We can replace your counter top if needed or you are replacing appliances that might require it. This replacement can also be done later.
A final point for your consideration. The primary reason for your kitchen rehabilitation decisions should be for your enjoyment of the kitchen and the home. It is also true that national surveys have repeatedly concluded that the most cost effective properly done home improvement project that you can make is in the kitchen.
