Real animal hide for furniture upholstery is controlled by size of animal skin, not by the running yard and accordingly impacts costs.
Upholstery fabric comes in various widths generally 48-60” wide and is sold by the running yard. The typical chair seat requires 1 yard at $60/yard, 1-yard minimum. Multiple dining chair seat pads can be done with 2/3rds yard, 1-yard minimum.
Real leather hides are available for chair and pad seats. The pricing is totally different. The following treats it as an add-on to normal fabric upholstery labor & material costs.
A typical hide provides 48 square feet in slightly different widths and lengths based on the size of animal. How it can be cut to fit the requirements varies slightly.
- The cost of a hide is $800. They are not sold in less than full hides.
- A typical hide can usually cover 6 dining chair pads (+$135 each) or up to 3 upholstered chair seats (+$270 each), depending on leather and chair sizes.
- The cost for the whole hide is required no matter how many chair or pad seats are done.
- Should the upholsterer happen to have a partial hide in the color of choice, the typical pricing is one half of a full hide or $400 for whatever is usable. Colors and grain textures will be very limited.
- For dining chairs up to 6 pads can be done for $800. For 6 chairs the leather add-on would then become $800 plus normal fabric labor and materials.
- That assumes 6 chairs. Fewer chairs still require full hide cost.
- 4 chairs: $800/4 = $200 more each.
- 2 chairs: $800/2 = $400 more each
- For a typical upholstered chair seat requiring 1 yard of fabric then half- hide is required to do the same. Assuming multiples of two chairs the add-on becomes $800 by 2 or $400 more than normal each of two chairs.
- This assumes 2 such chairs.
