Exterior wood items like patio tables chairs should receive no surface finish, in our opinion, since none are proven to last and to rework sooner or later makes it even a bigger issue. Think about the wood boat that must have its finish reworked almost annually.
That school class called Woodworking #101 taught certain basics. Among those were that all wood expands and contracts on the cross-grain. Another was that a protective finish should be applied to bring out the beauty of the wood and to provide the wood various kinds of protection to include from water and humidity. What that class did not teach was what to do with exterior wood items like benches, patio tables, and even decks.
A good finish on an interior furniture item will help it last a lifetime and look good along the way. However, that is just not so for wood that is exposed to the ravages of the outside weather. There is a lot of debate about whether to apply this protective finish or that protective finish to your new wood deck and patio furniture. Consumer Reports magazine has even tested dozens of brands and found them all wanting for results.
The bottom line, in my opinion, is to do nothing. That's right: do not apply any type of surface finish! We mean like paint or polyurethane. The only viable solution is a penetrating exterior oil and it will require annual reapplication but is reasonable to do.
